Why South Facing?

Have you ever wondered why a south-facing pool is important?

Since you will only be in Florida a short time, we think you will want to maximize your enjoyment of the pool.   If you are traveling in the peak summer months, the outside air is warm enough that even shade-covered pools should be warm enough to swim in.  If you are traveling in the Spring, Fall, or Winter months, and the pool you select is not south-facing, you run the risk that the pool is too cool to enjoy, even with a pool heater.  If you like to lay out in the sun and work on your tan, even in the summer months you might be disappointed with the shade that falls on most pools.

Here is an aerial image of four of our five homes.  When you look at our homes, you’ll notice that the pool area is completely covered in sun, and the driveways are almost completely covered in shade.  This is because the home casts a shadow north.

Here is an image of our newest home, right around the corner from the amazing children's playground - about a 90 second walk away.  Although this home does have rear neighbors, they are at a lower elevation than our home, so you only see the top of their pool cage - you are not staring at other families while you are swimming.

When you look at the photo below, the top row of homes have south-facing pools, and the bottom row of homes have north-facing pools.  You see the sunny pools on the top row, but when you look at the bottom row you’ll see those pools completely covered in shade, with the sun hitting their driveways.

Here's a photo from a home across the street from ours with a north-facing pool. It was a very sunny day, as you can tell from the homes in the background, but none of that sun falls on a north-facing pool.

When you drive around Windsor Hills, you will often see families who have pulled their lounge chairs out to the driveway or the side of the house so they can lay out in the sun. With our home, the sun is always on the pool area.  If you are traveling in the Spring, Fall, or Winter, when the sun sits lower in the sky and the shadows are elongated, I think the south-facing pool is even more important.

Here is a photo I took during our last visit to Windsor Hills. This family was staying in a villa on the west side of our home, so their pool faced east. This photo was taken in the afternoon, so the sun was in the western sky, making the "eastern pool" completely covered in shade. This family pulled all of their chairs from the pool area into the sunny side of the yard outside of the pool. Even though the photo quality isn't great, you can see their pool in the background completely covered in shade.  I went over and introduced myself and asked if I could post the photo on our website, and the mom laughed and said "as long as you don't show my bathing suit"!  We invited them over to our home for the rest of the week when they wanted to lay out in the sun and we had a great time.  Windsor Hills is a very friendly community.

Here’s the view from one of our pool areas.  Not only do we get sun all day long, but we also have privacy that comes from no rear neighbors:

Pool Heating in the Summer?

Since our pools are south-facing, many times guests will ask if they should still request to have the pool heated in the summer.  Some owners will tell you that you won't need the heating package in the summer, and sometimes that is correct.  What they forget to tell you is that the heater for the pool is the same heater that is used for the spa/hot tub.  For summer travel dates, I think the pool will be warm most days during your stay, but if any of the family would like to swim in the evening hours once the sun has gone down, or if any of the adults would like to relax in the spa after a long day at the parks, then the heating package is quite nice.  Without the heating package, the spa would be the same temperature as the pool water.  Just a tub with bubbles.  With the heating package, our spa can get up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) for a true hot-tub experience.
